The Animal Care Assistant is responsible for tasks related to the health, care, and sustenance of animals, which may include dogs and cats in kennels.

Depending on the area of assignment, incumbents may perform tasks related to domestic dog and cat care, services, and kennel maintenance at a county animal shelter. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Inventory Management: Maintain inventories of food, cleaning materials, and equipment.
Animal Care: Provide food and water to animals.
Sanitation: Clean animal kennels, cages, and shelter areas to ensure a sanitary and disease-free environment.
Equipment Operation: Operate pressure cleaning equipment, laundry washers and dryers, and dishwashing machines.
Additional Duties: Perform related work as required.
Knowledge: General maintenance and sanitation techniques.
Direction Following: Ability to follow written and oral directions.
Independence: Ability to perform duties with little or no supervision.
Stress Management: Ability to work under stressful conditions.
Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with others.
Outdoor Work: Work is generally performed outdoors and may occur during adverse weather conditions.
Physical Activity: Involves activities requiring considerable use of arms and legs, such as climbing, lifting, walking, stooping, and handling materials, equipment, and supplies.
Animal Handling: Handle, position, and restrain live animals.
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
